Slashing

Slashing

Definition:

Crypto slashing occurs when a blockchain validator misbehaves and endangers the network. This happens primarily on Proof of Stake networks where validators lock up their tokens, instead of solving math problems in PoW. The penalty for intentionally or accidentally providing wrong information to the network is losing some of your tokens. This is designed to keep everybody honest and keep the blockchain reliable. Retribution can be swift and long-lasting.
